Blog#8

The interview and blog post says that media literacy is the process of critically questioning messages being transmitted by media platforms. The identity of the sender of the media message, what their intent is for transmitting the message, and how the message is created are factors in the process ofexercising competent media literacy. Additional components of media literacy include identifying which individuals or industries profit from a specific media message as well as what pieces of information are being selectively left out of the media message and who the target audience of the media message is(Miller, 2021).

Media literacy is important because there are many misleading and dishonest media messages in the contemporary news and entertainment industries, and it is crucial to be mindful of the biases and ulterior motives that exist within the business of transmitting information. The absence of media literacy can result in an individual believing in false or incomplete information that benefits certain financial or ideological interests rather than the greater good of society and humanity as a whole(Trilling & Fadel, 2012).

Media literacy is dismissed because people can be overconfident in their own ability to tell apart legitimate information from propaganda. Individuals tend to have a high estimation of their own intelligence, and very few are willing to admit that they may have been gullible or otherwise vulnerable to media manipulation.

I should aim for varied views but a factual consensus in my PLN because there ought to be a clear agreement among every party in the PLN about what is and is not the truth. Without established truths, a PLN will be more difficult to manage and navigate. At the same time, a variety of viewpoints ought to be welcomed and considered because it will bring ideological diversity and intellectual enrichment to the PLN.

  1. Hi Chloe,

I appreciate the point you brought up about how media literacy is often dismissed due to individual’s overconfidence in their ability to distinguish truthful information in the media. As you noted, it may be difficult for people to admit that they blindly trusted an information source for potentially many years. Bias or false sources are incredibly prevalent on media today, and therefore it is important to develop media literacy skills in school so people can be prepared to devote more time and energy on discerning truthful information. People must realize that it is okay to make these mistakes, especially because of how common this issue is. People must also realize that it is never too late to develop media literacy skills and avoid making such errors in the future. Great post Chloe!

  2. I quite agree with your point of view. In contemporary society, news reports often involve interest issues, which is why there are some untrue reports. Owning media literature can avoid some harm to the public caused by untrue reports.

  3. Hi Chloe. I can see from your blog that you have a deep understanding of media literacy, and I agree with you that media literacy is being neglected today. A lot of people seem to have lost the ability to have a fair view of what’s happening online. Although this has something to do with the fact that a lot of news releases fake news in order to keep it hot, people should learn to get rid of the manipulation of the media.
    Love your blog!

  4. Hi Chloe,
You make a good point that one of the reasons for media literacy being neglected has to do with marginalized groups whose messages and stories are often ignored in mainstream media to appease the larger majority. Media literacy is an ability that is critical in contemporary society, as media are used to influence, disseminate factual or political information, and promote ideas on a range of topics .

  5. Hi Chloe, I agree with you that media literacy is an important thing. Because in the Contemporary news and entertainment industry. And a lot of people break false news for popularity. The same, people send out fake news for hype. It is a lot of misleading and dishonest media information out there. And it is vital to be aware of the biases and ulterior motives in the industries that disseminate information.
